Girl on a Beach
We are all just shells half asleep numb and forgetful
Catching glimpses of something slightly beyond confusion
Going through the motions of our automatic lives
Anxiety tosses us around like a ball
Anger carries us away like an unruly river
Desire beats us up like a clever bully
Fear persuades us to give up our dreams.
But like waves they come, dwell awhile, and go.
And the waves are the sea.
Rising and falling and rising and falling.
Where there is a crest there will soon be a trough.
But from the sea arises an island.
And this island is just beyond the reach of the waves.
From this refuge we experience the waves as one with the sea.
One day there were no waves.
And the island was one with the sea.
Oh yeah, and on the island there is a being who watches the sea.
She merely watches her mind.
Now the waves come and the waves go and the girl watches.
Just that for all else is the play of illusion.
